How to fight against prostatitis?

Date:2012-06-19 click:

To be one hundred percent honest, nobody knows what exactly causes prostatitis. Most doctors are not as concerned with prostatitis as they are with prostate cancer and therefore do not concentrate so much on it. This is because most of the time prostatitis is generally benign, it is in fact referred to as BPH or Benign Prostate Hyperplasia or Hypertrophy.

The only thing that is known is the mechanism by which the prostate gland swells up. The prostate is the gland that makes the fluid that makes up the majority of semen. It is the whitish fluid that both nourishes as well as works as an antibacterial agent, keeping the sperm alive when it is outside the testes.

This fluid is made by small tubes within the prostate called the acini. The acini are very small, and the whole of the prostate is filled with them. Each of these tubes make a very small amount of seminal fluid, but together they make quite a bit.

When these tubes get infected, the body, in reaction to the bacteria or fungi coats them with a form of calcium that forms a hard ball around the microbe and isolates the infection. The problem is that once this coating is done, the tube is effectively blocked. The blocking of the tube however does not stop it from continuing to make the seminal fluid.

While a few of these tubes blocking may not be an issue, when enough of them block, they can swell up to such proportions that they will cause the prostate to swell, bringing with it all the traditional symptoms of prostatitis.

This swelling can affect the whole of the prostate, or only one portion, depending on how much the infection has spread. What exactly causes this infection is not known, and there are no known bacterial or fungal agents. All the microbes found in tests are generally benign ones that are known to inhabit the body, or may be e coli bacteria that is once again not as uncommon as is believed.

Most doctors just advise hygiene, and keeping the genital area safe from injury, as injury too can cause blockage of the acini. Wearing clean underwear at all times is important, as is clean sex. Unprotected sex, even with the same partner when they have some infection of their reproductive system can result in you getting an infection in your prostate. In fact some doctors even believe that swimming in dirty water can cause prostatitis.

Available Prostatitis Treatment

The best treatment for prostatitis really depends on the type of prostatitis that is affecting you and your health. While many men develop a form of this condition from bacteria, they can also suffer from prostatitis as a result of an immune disorder, a nervous disorder, stress and simply direct trauma of the prostate. Due to the complexity of the disorder, you may need to try a number of treatments to discern which is best for you, so contact your family physician for a proper diagnosis of your condition.

Allopurinol

Another form of treatment that has proven effectual, namely when the cause of the prostatitis is unknown, is with a medication known as allopurinol, a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. What this medication does within the body is reduce the amount of uric acid secreted from the kidneys. The reason it could be effective in treating this condition is that there is some evidence that men suffering from non-bacterial prostatitis actually have higher levels of uric acid within their prostate, possibly linking this secretion to the disorder. By lessening the amount of uric acid in the prostate, it is believed that you'll experience a decrease in inflammation and pain.

Antibiotics

With any type of prostatitis that is caused by a bacterial infection, the best form of treatment ultimately relies on prescription antibiotics. If urine backflows into the tissue of the prostate, any bacteria contained within the fluid can cause an infection. This can create an irregularity within the prostate gland, prompting it to become tender and inflamed. When this happens, you often experience pain and discomfort within the pelvis and abdomen as well as upon urination. To counteract these symptoms and the cause of the infection, a course of antibiotics, given over a period of anywhere between 3 and 4 weeks, is usually quite effective.

Thermotherapy

You may also experience relief from your condition through the use of thermotherapy. Often referred to as transurethral microwave thermotherapy, or simply TUMT, a catheter is inserted directly into the bladder and a wire can then be guided to emit microwaves to heat and destroy any diseased or damaged tissue that could be causing the condition.

Massage

With chronic forms of prostatitis not caused from bacteria, a series of prostate massage treatments has also found some success. In this procedure, the prostate gland is manually massaged by a doctor to decrease inflammation and any associated pain. Though this can be the best treatment for some men with the condition, it doesn't work for all, so talk to your doctor about the possibility of prostate massage.

Self Care

It is also possible that the best form of treatment for prostatitis, especially in less severe cases of the condition, is self care. What this approach to treatment entails is the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and "sitz" baths along with the avoidance of certain substances that exacerbate the condition, such as caffeine and alcohol.

Herbal medication

Herbal remedy is a new innovation for prostatitis treatments in traditional Chinese medicine medical science. In ancient China, prostatitis is a not a separate disease category, actually it was classified into gonorrhoea. In recent years, it was studied as an independent branch, and herbalists made great progress. Medicine developed are more effective than usual. Dr.Lee, who has studied traditional Chinese medical science for about thirty years involved in this career. Diuretic and Anti-inflammatory Pill, which is a medicine developed by Dr.Lee, is reflected as an effective medicine. If you are not cured by other medications, you can have a try.
