Vitamin D Deficiency Or Insufficiency Affects Sperm Quality

Study finds that most indoor workers have problem of vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency. As skin exposure to sunlight produces vitamin D, it is also called sunshine vitamin. Canadian researchers found that vitamin D deficiency levels differ by occupation, with people who are working indoors even worse than others. The report was published in the online journal BMC Public Health.

vitamin D
As we know, vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, which is important for bone growth and preventing osteoporosis. It also plays a vital role in boosting the immune system and reducing inflammation. In addition, too little vitamin D has been linked with various health problems, including heart disease, obesity, certain cancers, mental health problems, and immune dysfunction, said Samantha Heller, of New York University Medical Center, in New York City. Except for these potential problems, vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency also affects sperm quality in men.
As people pay more attention to their skin condition, the use of sunscreen and limited outdoor time are becoming more and more widespread. People don’t generate a lot of vitamin D from sun exposure. For this reason, many people may need vitamin D supplements.
Recent years, more and more men have problem with fertility due to low sperm quality. Getting too little vitamin D is one of the causes. According to the report published in Daily Mail, vitamin D boosts sperm quality and thereby it will be better at swimming towards the egg, have greater speed and be more penetrative. The researchers found vitamin D raised calcium levels in the sperm and that, in turn, increased their motility and the proportion of the sperm undergoing the changes needed to fuse with a female egg.
To prevent the health problems caused by vitamin deficiency, it’s important for office workers to have some outdoor activities in the free time. Getting vitamin D from sunlight is the natural and healthful way, but a balance should be struck as getting too much sun because of the risk of skin cancer. Vitamin D is also found naturally in a few foods, such as milk, cod liver oil, sardines, salmon, tuna, eggs, mushrooms. Adding these foods in daily meals is a great way to get more vitamin D.
