The FDA requires some prescription and over-the-counter drugs taken by mouth to include warnings against drinking grapefruit juice or eating grapefruit while taking the drug.

The FDA’s Shiew Mei Huang pointed out that the juice lets more of the drug enter the blood. When there is too much drug in the blood, it can cause more side effects to the body.

There are many medications can be affected by grapefruit. Examples of types of drugs that can be interact with grapefruit include some antihistamines (Allegra), cholesterol-lowering statin drugs (Zocor and Lipitor), high blood pressure drugs (Procardia and Adalat CC), anti-anxiety drugs (buspirone), drugs used to treat abnormal heart rhythms (Pacerone and Nexterone), etc.

Not all medications in the listed categories can be affected by grapefruit juice. The severity of the interaction may vary from person to person. The amount of the grapefruit juice can also affect the effect of the medication.

Since some medications can be affect by grapefruit juice, you’d better ask your health care provider about the medications carefully. And it’s necessary to find out whether it is affected by grapefruit juice. And if it is not a problem, you should know the amount of the juice you can take.

It is harmful to take medications blindly without a proper instruction. Though medicines are made to treat and prevent diseases, improper use of them can also do harm to the body. Except for taking the right dosage of the medicine, you should also     check to see if some foods should be avoided during the medication treatment. Grapefruit juice is a convictive example. As there are other fruits or juices may affect your medication in a similar way, it’s imperative to attach more importance to this problem.
