The normal semen when men ejaculate is milk-white, while blood in the semen would presented when diseases appeared on the genitourinary system.

The presence of blood in the semen is also called hematospermia. Hematospermia is not always noticed, therefore, it is difficult to make estimates of its incidence. It can be caused by many conditions affecting the male genitourinary system. Areas affected may include the bladder, urethra, the testicles, the tubes that distribute semen from the seminal vesicles, the epididymis, and the prostate gland. Also it is most commonly a result of a prostate gland biopsy. Besides, a number of benign and malignant conditions of the male genital system may be the cause of blood in semen. However, how to treat this condition? Does the disorder self-cure through diet recuperation?

On the one hand, treatment of blood in the semen is directed toward the underlying cause if a cause has been found. Sometimes, treatment with antibiotics for a presumptive diagnosis of prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate gland) is given, since some studies have shown that up to about one-fourth of men with hematospermia have prostatitis. However, the benefit of such treatment has not been definitively established. While a herbal pill, named as Diuretic and anti-inflammatory pill, was proved to be the significant effect on prostatitis, seminal vesiculitis, and other disorders of male genitourinary system. Many clinical practices indicated that the pill is much better than antibiotics to treat these diseases.

On the other hand, in most cases, if blood in the semen is not associated with any known abnormality of other troubling symptoms, no treatment is given, and the condition usually resolves on its own with time in these situations. Persistent hematospermia (for a month or more) even in the absence of other symptoms warrants further or follow-up evaluation.

In addition, dietetic therapy usually obtained better effects on the treatment of blood in the semen. Patients with bloody semen can often eat foods that have the function of nourishing Yin, clearing heat, dampness, cooling blood and hemostasis in the daily diet. Lotus seed, wax gourd, Chinese date, and cyprinoid etc. are good foods to recuperate hematospermia. The dietetic therapy have more therapeutic effect on persistent hematospermia. Patient’s condition will be stable under the careful recuperation, and will not lead to male infertility.
