According to a study published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, superbugs may be spreading more widely than previously thought. Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), which tend to spread in hospitals and long-term care facilities, cause an estimated 9,300 infections and 600 deaths each year in the US. This news is published on CNN on January 17, 2017. Nowadays, many antibiotics are useless because of the development of drug-resistance. It has been a big health threat worldwide.

drug-resistance

As the bacteria continue to thrive even when given the strongest medicines reserved for the toughest cases, new drugs should be invented to control the spreading of untreated infections. From 1980 to 1984, there were nearly 20 FDA drug applications approved for new antibiotics, but from 2005 to 2009, there were fewer than five applications approved, according to the CDC. The difficulty in developing new drugs makes some of bacterial infection can’t be controlled completely. On the other hand, most of people don’t know the damages of antibiotics, the misuse and overuse of antibiotics make the problem even severer.

A study showed that doctors will more likely to prescribe antibiotics if a patient with high expectation of antibiotics, which means the patients will be given drugs even if the doctor don’t think it can be helpful. This phenomenon has raised concerns of many researchers. They think it’s very important for doctors to reduce patients’ expectations for antibiotics. It may be the first step to control the use of antibiotics.

Though antibiotics can be used to cure most of diseases that caused by bacterial infections, they’re ineffective in treating a chronic inflammation for they will develop drug resistance during a long-term treatment. Many patients have complained about the drug resistance of this treatment. When taking antibiotics, they will take effect in a short time. However, once stop taking drugs, the symptoms will recur and become even worse. Except for the drug resistance and tolerance, long-term use of antibiotics will also do harm to the liver and kidneys. That’s why more and more people prefer to use natural remedies.

Antibiotics are effective in most of cases, however, it’s important to watch out for the drug-resistance while using this medication. As the development of medicine, natural remedy is becoming more and more popular. It’s also a treatment option for bacterial infections.
