Study Finds Gonorrhea Rate Reduces Because of Vaccine Use

According to the statistics of the Division of STD Prevention at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were more than 390,000 people infected with gonorrhea in the United States in 2015. Compared with the previous year, this is a 13% increase. It is estimated that more than 800,000 new infections occur every year, but because gonorrhea can happen with no symptoms, fewer than half of all new infections are diagnosed. The untreated cases can make the problem more serious, including leading to infertility in both men and women.

 

A study raises hopes for gonorrhea vaccine as it finds that having received the meningococcal vaccine reduced the incidence of gonorrhea by about 31%. It was published in the journal The Lancet. 

 

Researchers find the genetic makeup of Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria (which cause gonorrhea) and Neisseria meningitidis bacteria (which cause meningococcal disease) is 85 to 90% similar. To see how rates of gonorrhea fell after the vaccination campaign, researchers performed a scientific study. The result indicates that  the vaccine protected against gonorrhea but not chlamydia, an unrelated organism. The results encourages scientists to develop a specific vaccine against the STD, which causes about 78 million new cases worldwide each year.

 

Though gonorrhea is still treatable in some cases in US, the new drug is also urgently needed as gonorrhea has shown increasing antibiotic resistance in recent years. Due to the drug resistance, some patients are unable to be treated with any available drug.
